Problem Gambling Awareness Month Promotes ‘Caring Communities, Stronger Futures’
WASHINGTON, DC—DC Lottery, in partnership with the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG), recognizes March as Problem Gambling Awareness Month (PGAM). This year’s theme, “Caring Communities, Stronger Futures,” emphasizes the importance of problem gambling awareness, aims to reduce associated stigma, and promotes the availability of prevention, treatment, and recovery services.
Problem gambling is defined as gambling behaviors that disrupt or damage personal, family, or professional lives. In the US, an estimated 2.5 million adults (1%) meet the criteria for a severe gambling problem. Another 5–8 million (2–3%) are considered to have mild or moderate gambling problems. And last year, approximately 20 million American adults reported experiencing at least one indicator of problematic gambling behavior.
“DC Lottery is committed to offering lottery and gaming products safely and responsibly, and March gives us a special opportunity to connect with players, retailers, and the broader DC community to increase understanding that gambling-related harm is preventable and early intervention can make a difference,” said DC Lottery Executive Director Randy Burnside. “We care deeply about the community and continue to place our focus on raising awareness about problem gambling, available treatment resources, and the importance of responsible play.”
Earlier this year, the World Lottery Association recognized DC Lottery’s Responsible Gaming Program and the agency’s commitment to responsible gaming by awarding them Level 2 certification.
If you or someone you know is struggling with a gambling problem, tools and resources are available:
- Free, confidential support is accessible 24/7 by phone (1-800-MY-RESET), text (800GAM), or chat.
- When playing online, players can establish time and deposit limits.
- DC Lottery’s self-exclusion program allows players to voluntarily request exclusion from sports wagering and lottery activities within the District for 18 months, 3 years, 5 years, or a lifetime.
